How to Level Skills Faster in The Sims 4
Skill speed in The Sims 4 is a multiplier. The game multiplies your Sim's mood, their traits, the lot properties and pack perks. In this article you will learn exactly which things speed skills up, the exact multipliers, and where each bonus comes from.

Four skill groups come up constantly, so here they are in full:
Mental (23): Logic, Programming, Handiness, Rocket Science, Robotics, Fabrication, Fishing, Gardening, Video Gaming, Gemology, Apothecary, Herbalism, Archaeology, Research & Debate, Veterinarian, Wellness, Medium, Thanatology, Entomology, Natural Living, Vampire Lore, Mental (child), Thinking (toddler).
Creative (23): Painting, Writing, Guitar, Piano, Violin, Pipe Organ, Singing, DJ Mixing, Cooking, Gourmet Cooking, Baking, Mixology, Juice Fizzing, Photography, Knitting, Pottery, Flower Arranging, Papercraft, Cross-stitch, Tattooing, Media Production, Creativity (child), Imagination (toddler).
Physical (9): Fitness, Dancing, Swordsmanship, Skiing, Snowboarding, Diving, Nectar Making, Motor (child), Movement (toddler).
Social (8): Charisma, Comedy, Mischief, Romance, Parenting, Selvadoradian Culture, Social (child), Communication (toddler).
Emotions / mood
We suggest starting here: mood is available from the first minute of the base game and costs you nothing. Each mood multiplies skill gain for its own group, and the high tier of an emotion (for example, Very Focused) multiplies harder.
Inspired — creative skills ×1.4, ×1.6 at the high tier. A Thoughtful Shower, Browsing Art on the computer and examining elements and fossils under the microscope make a Sim Inspired; with the Businesses & Hobbies expansion pack, so do Pinetree Oil and pine incense sticks — the Oil Burner and the Incense Burner are both thrown on the pottery wheel with the Pottery skill.
Focused — mental skills ×1.4, ×1.6 at the high tier. Browsing Simpedia on the computer, the Ponder Moves action at a chess table and Birchwood Oil from Businesses & Hobbies all make a Sim Focused. With the Spa Day game pack, saffron incense sticks give the same emotion.
Energized — physical skills ×1.4, ×1.6 at the high tier. A Brisk Shower, coffee and Elderflower Oil from Businesses & Hobbies make a Sim Energized.
Confident and Happy — all skills ×1.2, ×1.4 at the high tier. A universal fallback when the right emotion is out of reach.
Sad — creative skills ×1.2, but the other three groups ×0.8. Only works for an artist.
Playful and Flirty — no effect on skill speed.
Tense, Bored and Uncomfortable — all skills ×0.8.
Stressed and Miserable — all skills ×0.6.
Enraged — creative and mental skills ×0.4.
So calm your Enraged writer down first, and only then sit them in front of the novel.
Emotional Aura. Some decor and reward objects radiate an emotion. Click the object, choose Enable Emotional Aura, and place it next to the easel, computer or workout machine — the emotion then holds itself. Sims in the right mood craft such objects themselves. For example, a Focused Sim draws a Mathematical Diagram, and it radiates a focusing aura.
Traits
Traits are picked in Create a Sim, three per adult. This choice sets the Sim's learning speed for their whole life.
Overachiever, High School Years — all skills ×1.75, no conditions attached. The strongest trait in the game.
Wise, For Rent — all skills ×1.5.
Practice Makes Perfect, base game — ×0.5 to start, then ×0.9, ×1.3, ×1.6 and ×1.8 at the top tier. The multiplier grows with daily practice in one group, which is where "slower at first" comes from.
Gloomy, base game — creative skills ×1.2, ×1.4 at the deep tier. A stronger Sad.
Active, base game — Natural Living ×1.25.
Contrary to what everyone assumes, Genius, Creative, Active and Self-Assured from the base game have no multipliers of their own. They push the Sim into Focused, Inspired, Energized and Confident more often, and the emotion supplies the multiplier. The Natural Living bonus on Active is the one exception.
Two more traits come as a gift for an aspiration — you neither buy them nor pick them in the editor:
Quick Learner — all skills ×1.1. Granted for any aspiration in the Knowledge category: Renaissance Sim, Computer Whiz, Nerd Brain, Academic and others.
Muser — creative skills ×1.6, ×1.8 at the high tier. Replaces normal Inspired with a stronger version. Granted for any aspiration in the Creativity category: Painter Extraordinaire, Bestselling Author, Musical Genius, Master Maker and others.
The Patriarch/Matriarch trait deserves a special mention — all skills ×3 and +2 effective skill levels, but only for the Sim's own children and only while they are near the parent and building a skill. The biggest multiplier in the game! The Big Happy Family aspiration grants it.
The Rewards Store
Rewards are bought with Satisfaction Points from the Rewards Store on the aspiration panel. All are available in the base game.
Savant, 4000 points — all skills ×1.25 and no conditions at all. The headline purchase here.
Morning Sim and Night Owl, 1000 points each — all skills ×1.25, but only for 6.5 hours a day. Morning Sim starts at 5 AM and runs until roughly 11:30 AM, Night Owl starts at 8 PM and runs until roughly 2:30 AM.
Childhood memories
A separate series of "…as a Kid" traits at 100 points each, and each gives ×1.35 to its skill. Buy one if you already know what the Sim is going to be! The system itself came with the Adventure Awaits expansion pack, but individual traits are added by other packs, and the store names the required pack next to each trait.
Fisher-kid — Fishing.
Inspired Childhood Artist — Painting.
Had a Green Thumb as a Kid — Gardening.
Played Doctor as a Kid — Logic (Parenthood game pack).
Expanded Taste Buds — Gourmet Cooking.
Crafty Kid — Papercraft.
Annoyed Everyone and Everything — Mischief.
Born for Politics — Charisma (City Living expansion pack).
Horse Kid — Horse Riding (Horse Ranch expansion pack).
Honorary Childhood Touring Musician — four skills at once: Guitar, Piano, Violin, Singing.
Rough'n Tumble Childhood — every physical skill: Fitness, Rock Climbing, Skiing, Snowboarding, Swordsmanship, Diving, Dancing.
Had a Creative Best Imaginary Friend — every creative skill.
Ran a Club as a Kid — all skills ×1.25 (Get Together expansion pack). The only one in the series that covers every skill at once.
Keep in mind that each of these traits only works on its own skill, so there is no point buying Fisher-kid for a future painter. But 100 points for a ×1.35 is the best deal in the whole Rewards Store.
Click a Sim and choose the Recall a Lost Formative Moment action — one of these traits comes free, from the same list. The action is only available to a Sim who has no childhood trait yet, so use it before you spend anything in the Rewards Store.
Mentoring, lectures and classes
Start with the free option: Mentoring. It takes a second Sim at level 5 in the skill, always above the student's level (there is no level floor for Fitness — being higher is enough — and Archery needs level 4). Click a skill-building object and choose Ask for Mentoring or Offer Mentoring. The student's base multiplier is ×1.1, but a hidden multiplier for the mentor's own level stacks on top: ×1.1 at level 6, ×1.2 at 7, ×1.3 at 8, ×1.4 at 9 and ×1.5 at 10. A mentor at level 10 gives the student ×1.65, and the Super Mentor trait adds another ×1.25 on top.
Everything else in this section requires the Businesses & Hobbies expansion pack.
The Hobby Whiteboard is a Buy Mode object. The Sim who owns the skill picks Hold Lecture, everyone else picks Listen to Lecture. A listener gets ×1.1, ×1.25 or ×1.45 to all skills depending on the lecturer's own skill level: ×1.1 at level 5–6, ×1.25 at 7–8, ×1.45 at 9–10. Skills with five levels use different thresholds — levels 3, 4 and 5. If the listener's own skill level is higher than the lecturer's, the listener gets bored and receives ×0.6.
The same whiteboard also hosts Hobby Classes: an instructor runs them at a small business, and attendees pay to join. The reward applies to a whole skill group — bronze ×1.1, silver ×1.2, gold ×1.3. The groups are:
culinary — Cooking, Gourmet Cooking, Baking, Mixology, Juice Fizzing, Nectar Making, Apothecary, Herbalism;
creative — Writing, Tattooing, Painting, Knitting, Pottery, Flower Arranging, Papercraft, Cross-stitch, Photography, Gemology, Handiness;
musical — Guitar, Piano, Violin, Pipe Organ, Singing, DJ Mixing, Media Production;
athletic — Fitness, Rock Climbing, Skiing, Snowboarding, Swordsmanship, Diving, Dancing, Bowling, Horse Riding;
mental — every mental skill from the list above plus Pet Training and Entrepreneur;
social — every social skill plus Acting.
Mastery Perks arrive on their own when a Sim uses a skill: every such action carries a 1.5% chance. Elders get them six times as often, and being mentored or the Give Motivating Speech action triples the chance. Each perk already earned lowers the chance of the next, and a Sim can collect no more than three. A master's aura gives everyone nearby ×1.5 on its group. The Pigeonholed perk is hard specialization: the chosen group ×2, the other three ×0.5.
Lot traits
Lot traits are applied in Build Mode via Venue Info and the traits panel.
Seven base game traits work identically — ×1.5 to their skills. The only difference is which skills those are:
Fast Internet — Programming, Video Gaming, Writing.
Great Acoustics — Guitar, Piano, Violin, Pipe Organ, Singing, DJ Mixing.
Homey — Cooking, Mixology, Gardening, Handiness.
Science Lair — Logic and Rocket Science.
Convivial — Charisma, Comedy, Mischief.
Natural Light — Painting, Photography and Handiness.
Bracing Breezes — Fitness, Rock Climbing, Skiing, Snowboarding, Swordsmanship, Diving, Dancing and Wellness.
Three more lot traits come with packs:
Training Ground, Cats & Dogs — Pet Training ×2.5. The record among lot traits, even if it only covers one skill.
Study Spot, Discover University — all skills ×1.2. A smaller multiplier, but it covers every skill.
Tiny Home, Tiny Living — all skills ×2. The lot has to be set to the Tiny Home residential type, and the home must cover no more than 64 tiles. The game then assigns the Tiny Home tier (up to 64 tiles) or the Micro Home tier (up to 32 tiles), and both give ×2. The Small Home tier (up to 100 tiles) gives no skill multiplier.
That multiplier alone is worth squeezing into a small footprint.
Potions and serums
The game has two such items, and both work on every skill at once:
CelebuSerum, Get Famous — all visible skills ×1.2 for three hours. A fame perk unlocks it, and after that one arrives in the mail at the Sim's own home once a day, except on Sunday.
Potion of the Nimble Mind, Realm of Magic — all skills ×1.5 for four hours. The recipe is learned from the Tome of the Nimble Mind, which any Spellcaster below Adept rank can read. Brewing itself carries no skill requirement.
The serum has a catch: with a 40% chance the Sim gets ×0.75 for the same three hours once the effect ends, so drink the next one before the effect runs out. And a failed swallow of the potion gives ×0.5 for two hours, with the failure chance falling the better the potion was brewed.
Packs
The remaining boosters are tied to specific packs:
Clubs, Get Together — nearly every skill in the game has its own Club Perk, from Apothecary to Cross-stitch, and each gives ×2.5. Bought with club points, and they only work during a Club Gathering. Two exceptions: the Knitting perk gives ×2, and the Flower Arranging perk does not work at all — a bug in the game data.
Dynasties, Royalty & Legacy — ×1.2 in the first generation, ×1.3 in the second, ×1.4 in the third, separately for mental, creative, social and physical skills. Affinity perks unlock through dynasty prestige and pass down by inheritance.
Muscle Memory, Businesses & Hobbies — all visible skills ×1.15, ×1.3 and ×1.5 as you invest into it. A small business perk, bought with perk points.
GeekCon festival, City Living — Logic, Programming and Video Gaming grow faster, but only while the Sim is at the festival.
Vampires, the game pack of the same name — Pipe Organ ×1.1.
Higher Education, Discover University — a completed degree grants the trait. It is not a multiplier: at the Research Archive Machine a Sim researches a specific skill and earns a portion of that skill's XP per research action. A trait holder gets one third more XP from every action.
Dynasties are the only booster in the game you have to save up across generations. And vampires get their multiplier simply for being vampires.
Afterword
Every multiplier in the game stacks by multiplication, so the best results come from combining them. The cheapest place to start is emotions — the right mood gives ×1.4 in the base game and costs nothing. Among one-time investments, the best value are Ran a Club as a Kid at 100 points (all skills ×1.25) and a Tiny Home (all skills ×2 for a Tiny Home lot of up to 64 tiles). And if that is not enough for you, you will have to sweat: keep a parent with the Patriarch/Matriarch trait nearby for its ×3 to skill speed — add the Overachiever trait (×1.75) and the right emotion at its high tier on the learner, and skills grow 8.4 times faster!
Toddlers matter too: raising every toddler skill to level 3 grants the Sim the Happy Toddler trait for life (all skills ×1.1), and level 5 grants Top-Notch Toddler (all skills ×1.25 and ×1.25 to career performance).
